چکیده

We analyze the regularity of the optimal exercise boundary for the American Put option when the underlying asset pays a discrete dividend at a known time td during the lifetime of the option. The ex-dividend asset price process is assumed to follow Black-Scholes dynamics and the dividend amount is a deterministic function of the ex-dividend asset price just before the dividend date. The solution to the associated optimal stopping problem can be characterised in terms of an optimal exercise boundary which, in contrast to the case when there are no dividends, may no longer be monotone. In this paper we prove that when the dividend function is positive and concave, then the boundary is non-increasing in a left-hand neighbourhood of td, and tends to 0 as time tends to t − d with a speed that we can characterize. When the dividend function is linear in a neighbourhood of zero, then we show continuity of the exercise boundary and a high contact principle in the left-hand neighbourhood of td. When it is globally linear, then right-continuity of the boundary and the high contact principle are proved to hold globally. Finally, we show how all the previous results can be extended to multiple dividend payment dates in that case.

Optimal stopping and American options with discrete dividends and exogenous risk

In this paper we analyze some problems arising in the evaluation of American options when the underlying security pays discrete dividends. To this aim, we study the problem of maximizing the expected gain process over stopping times taking values in the union of disjoint, real compact sets. The results we obtain can be applied to evaluate options with restrictions on exercise periods, but are a...

The American put and European options near expiry, under Lévy processes

We derive explicit formulas for time decay, θ, for the European call and put options at expiry, and use them to calculate analytical approximations to the price of the American put and early exercise boundary near expiry. We show that for many families of non-Gaussian processes used in empirical studies of financial markets, the early exercise boundary for the American put without dividends is ...

Universal Bad News Principle and Pricing of Options on Dividend-paying Assets

We solve the pricing problem for perpetual American puts and calls on dividend-paying assets. The dependence of a dividend process on the underlying stochastic factor is fairly general: any non-decreasing function is admissible. The stochastic factor follows a Lévy process. This specification allows us to consider assets that pay no dividends at all when the level of the underlying factor (say,...

Analysis of the Optimal Exercise Boundary of American Options for Jump Diffusions

In this paper we show that the optimal exercise boundary/ free boundary of the American put option pricing problem for jump diffusions is continuously differentiable (except at the maturity). We also discuss the higher order regularity of the free boundary.

Fast trees for options with discrete dividends∗

The valuation of options using a binomial non-recombining tree with discrete dividends can be intricate. This paper proposes three different enhancements that can be used alone or combined to value American options with discrete dividends using a nonrecombining binomial tree. These methods are compared in terms of both speed and accuracy with a large sample of options with one to four discrete ...
